Twinning
Twinning
Town twinning was established immediately after World War II when mayors and citizens were determined to prevent further conflicts in Europe. CEMR has always focused on bringing together citizens from different countries and cultures and fostering cooperation between local representatives and communities.
In our vision, strengthening exchange links between municipalities is crucial for Europe's development.
Today, city-to-city cooperation continues to adapt, allowing municipalities to collaborate on specific issues like water management, economic development, and social services improvement. CEMR works to ensure that Twinning remains relevant and effective in addressing contemporary challenges by promoting modern, high-quality exchanges that engage all sectors of European society.
Focus Group on Town Twinning
The focus group includes twinning coordinators and experts from CEMR member associations. It aims to promote, monitor, and develop new forms of twinning, and provides recommendations to the European Commission on the Europe for Citizens programme.
Objectives:
- Ensure peaceful relations and active local participation among Europeans.
- Strengthen mutual understanding and friendship between European citizens.
- Provide an online platform to facilitate new twinning partnerships between European municipalities.
- Encourage technical cooperation and the exchange of best practices between municipalities.
- Support good local governance and reinforce the role of local and regional authorities in European integration.
