Covenant of Mayors Ceremony: climate and energy as crisis exit strategy

Local and regional elected representatives are to gather in Brussels, Belgium, on 29 November 2011, for the annual Covenant of Mayors Ceremony in order to share their views with European leaders on energy and.climate sustainability as a means of successfully leading the EU out of the current social, economic and political crisis.

Around 500 new municipalities will sign the Covenant of Mayors in the presence of European Parliament president, Jerzy Buzek, European Commission president, José Manuel Barroso, and president of the Committee of the Regions, Mercedes Bresso.

Participants will then meet to discuss smart energy investments as a way out of the crisis and the local contribution to European resource efficiency targets, in the hopes of 'restoring faith in Europe's future through local sustainable energy", as is named the 2011 edition of the ceremony.

The Covenant of Mayors Ceremony coincides with the international conference on climate change to be held in Durban, South Africa, starting 28 November 2011, and with the debate on the EU multiannual financial framework, which is to increase the climate-related share of the budget by at least 20%.
