European Commission vice-president talks of return to grassroots at CEMR General Assembly

People do not trust politicians at the European and national levels anymore, and the only way to get their trust back is to go grassroots again.”

Such was stated by Viviane Reding, vice-president of the European Commission for justice, fundamental rights and citizenship, on Thursday 27 September 2012, at the occasion of the General Assembly of European Municipalities and Regions in Cadiz, Spain.

Indeed, “politics is not about institutions, as these are tools.  In the end, politics is about human beings and the contact politicians have with people,” she continued.

We need a political Europe, a federation of Europeans.  Now it is time to see what form this federation will take,” she concluded in her address to the plenary, which brought together participants from over 40 different countries all across Europe and the world.
