Dexia publishes study on subnational public finance in EU between 2000 and 2010

On 1 July 2011, the European bank Dexia published a study on trends in subnational public finance in the European Union between 2000 and 2010, with an overview of the finances and institutions of the.subnational public sector in the 27 EU member states.

This 2011 edition is available in English and French, and presents provisional data for 2010 and a retrospective of the last ten years. According to the study, European municipalities and regions were able to react quickly to the consequences of the financial, economic and social crises and, more recently, to the challenges of consolidating public finances.

The study, which is mostly based on Eurostat data, analyses the situation of local and regional government between 2000 and 2007, before the beginning of the recession, and between 2008 and 2009, during the worst of the crisis. It also takes a close look at 2010, a transitional year for decentralised levels of government, in the context of the economic recovery and the implementation of national austerity plans to restore public finances.
