Lithuanian local authorities encourage students to work within municipal administrations

The Association of Local Authorities in Lithuania (ALAL) has launched a three-year project, funded by the European Social Fund, with the aim of encouraging fourth-year undergraduate students to undertake traineeships within municipal administrations.

This project, dubbed 'Development of student practices in local self-government administrations", will put forward methodological guidelines in order to facilitate the organisation of practical traineeships for students. The guidelines will notably catalogue the expectations of and the opportunities made available to students, universities and municipal administrations. An online database is also being prepared and will include data on students and traineeship opportunities.

'Our aim is to encourage young people to become civil servants in the municipal sector," explains Roma éakaitienë, executive director of ALAL. 'Thanks to these traineeships, municipalities and their citizens will strongly benefit from the input of young, innovative and eager minds, while young people will gain invaluable work experience where democracy and governance begins."

ALAL expects students to begin to benefit from this project by the end of 2011.
