Bulgaria first accredited to award European Label of Governance Excellence
Bulgaria is the first country to have been accredited by the Council of Europe (CoE) to award the European Label of Governance Excellence (EloGE) to Bulgarian municipalities, as part of the latter's.Strategy for innovation and good governance at the local level.
The label,.which was launched in 2010, serves to acknowledge European local authorities for their achievements in the implementation of good governance initiatives, based on 12 principles of good democratic governance enshrined within the aforementioned strategy.
In 2007, Bulgaria became one of the first pilot countries to apply the Strategy for innovation and good governance at the local level, together with Belgium, the Czech Republic, France, Italy, Norway, Spain and the Ukraine.
The National Association of Municipalities in the Republic of Bulgaria played an active role in assessing good governance practices led by municipalities in the framework of the CoE strategy.
Bulgarian local authorities and CEMR
The Council of European Municipalities and Regions (CEMR) has one Bulgarian member association, the National Association of Municipalities in the Republic of Bulgaria (NAMRB).
NAMRB, presided over by Dora Yankova, Mayor of Smolyan, was founded in 1996 by one third of Bulgaria's municipalities. Since 1999, all of the country's municipalities have become members of the association.
Each municipality is entitled to one voice within the association, the equality of its members being one of NAMRB's fundamental principles. The association notably supports its members and jointly represents their common interests at the national level.
