EISCO conference to take place in Bilbao
Roughly 400 local and regional authority experts and representatives from across Europe are to gather in Bilbao from 20 to 22 May for the 8th European Information Society Conference (EISCO), organised with the support of the Council of European Municipalities and Regions (CEMR).
The conference will provide European municipalities and regions with the opportunity to exchange experiences and best practices with regards to how information technology can help enhance citizen participation and inclusion. This will allow for the provision of better public services and for a more effective organisation of local and regional government.
Since the 2005 EISCO conference, the main focus has been the implementation of the Digital Local Agenda (DLA), a strategic plan seeking to promote the development of an information society in European municipalities, cities and regions. The DLA is a common strategy implemented according to urban and regional specificities and designed to modernise administrative practices as well as improve local governance, social cohesion and ultimately sustainable development. This year's conference will serve to discuss and assess the progress made by the DLA in Europe since its implementation.
EISCO 2010 speakers should include, among others, Iñaki Azkuna, Mayor of the city of Bilbao, Neelie Kroes, Vice-president of the European Commission and Commissioner for Digital Agenda and Jokin Bildarratz Sorron, President of the Association of Basque Municipalities (EUDEL).
The conference is to be hosted by EUDEL and the ELANET network.
