European Socialists issue resolution supporting European Constitution

The Bureau of the Union of local and regional elected socialists and social-democrats of Europe has adopted a resolution calling for socialist elected politicians to campaign in favour of the European constitutional treaty in their constituencies.
 
The Bureau stressed the positive aspects of the constitutional treaty for local collectivities; it called for the ratification of the treaty, adding that "it represents one of the most important milestones of European integration, a historical step forward for Europe's citizens and for the emergence of more democratic Europe".
 
In the resolution, elected local and regional socialists call Europe's citizens to vote in favour of the ratification ofn the treaty.
 
At the Berlin meeting, the mayor of Hanover, Herbert Schmalstieg, was elected President of the union. He succeeds MEP Bernard Poignant.
