“The 2008 Golden Stars are…”

The European Commission has awarded the 2008 Golden Stars to twinnings projects that encourage action and debate on EU issues at grass-roots level.
 
The six town twinning projects' winners.are:
  1. The future of the European Union: Consequences and perspectives of the enlargement: Reichelsheim (DE) – Dol de Bretagne (FR) – Jablonka (PL) – Nagymanyok (HU);
  2. Meeting of the citizens of the partner towns: Bojnice (SK) – Bad Krozingen (DE) – Rosta (IT) – Jesenik (CZ) – Zator (PL);
  3. Magic 27 – The Future of common Europe: Bialogard (PL) – Akniste (LV) – Gnosjö (SE) – Olen (BE) – Caracal (RO);
  4. 1st European youth meeting: "Mobility of young people in Europe": Association of twinning committees of Puy de Dôme (FR) – Moggio Udinese, Nemi, Ariccia, Sarsina, Liúciana Nardi, Fosdinovo, Montessoro al Mare (IT) – Beratzhausen, Gerestried, Lichtenfels, Empfingen, Grebenstein, Kallmunz, Parsberg (DE) – Chelmsford/Great-Waltham (UK) – Povoa De Lanhoso/Taide, Viana Do Castelo (PT) – Lopik (NL) – Sùawków, Czarna Dabrowka (PL) – Oradea (RO);
  5. Forum of the EU citizens and municipal officers: Striving for better public services: Municipality of Amaroussion (EL) – Fonte Nuova (IT) – Ghent (BE) – Lakatamia, Strovolos, Limassol (CY) – Nea Ionia Magnesias, Voula, Xanthi (EL) – Ploiesti (RO) – Porto (PT) – UmeÃ¥ (SE);
  6. Sustainable development – Issue for European citizens: Plérin (FR) – Avrig (RO) – Wronki (PL) – Cookstown (UK).
The Golden Stars are awarded in the framework of the "Europe for citizens" programme. They reward cooperation initiatives in the field of civic participation. Members in the jury included representatives from the European Parliament, the Committee of the Regions, the European Economic and Social Committee and the Council of European Municipalities and Regions (CEMR).
 
The European Commissioner for Education, Training, Culture and Youth, Ján Figel, said: Europe needs participation, needs the feedback of its citizens. The Europe for Citizens programme endorses and promotes successful efforts of active civic participation with concrete results.
 
The award ceremony will take place on 13 November 2008, in Brussels. It will be open to the public upon registration.
