regional elections in Czech republic : strong gains for the opposition

The opposition centre-right ODS party of President Vaclav Klaus will control 12 of the Czech republic's 13 regions, following the 5-6 November 2004 elections.

The ruling social democrat party finished third, behind the communist party.

Provisional results show 36% of Czech voters cast their ballot for ODS. Overall turnout was just under 30%.

In June 2004, the ODS won the European Parliament elections, prompting the reshuffle of the governing coalition.
